CHÖKHOR DÜCHEN

Dear Dharma friends,

we are pleased to invite you to the ONLINE festival of one of the four most important events of Tibetan Buddhism, Chökhor Düchen - festival of Turning the Wheel of Dharma, led by Venerable Sabchu Rinpoche.

Chökhor Düchen commemorates the day when the historical Buddha Shakyamuni presented his discovered wisdom for the first time to the five former spiritual companions, 7 weeks after attaining enlightenment. This first teaching, given in the Deer Park (present-day Sarnath near Varanasi) is known as the Four Noble Truths and forms the foundation of Buddha-Dharma, the Buddha's teachings. Across all Buddhist traditions, these teachings are regarded as the first and essential teaching through which the Buddha demonstrated his awakened state of mind.

This first gathering of the five former spiritual companions, Chökhor Düchen also marks the first establishment of what is called Sangha, Buddha’s community. Chökhor Düchen is therefore a significant day from the perspective of all Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Even after more than 2,500 years, the timeless wisdom of these teachings, such as The Four Noble Truths, still remains a path to complete liberation - enlightenment. The Sangha, which started with these five companions, is now millions of practitioners around the world.
